- GMandJMExplorerEvery time I see/hear the term "South Alabama" I think of Lois Malone. :)
Allworth's post makes me wonder why we bothered getting the MoHo turn signals fixed last month, since we no longer need use them. The old Florida rule was that one turn signal (the right one?) had to be on at all times.
That being said, thanks for the reminder that am now required to buy flip-flops. Something to spend that "yankee money" on. - AllworthExplorer IILizzie,
You mean in South Alabama? - GMandJMExplorer

Your insurance does not have to be in Florida. My insurance company is USAA out of Texas.
We checked with USAA and they required us to get a Florida policy, which included different coverages (and which was, of course, more expensive). - lizzieExplorerAllworth, those special benefits only apply for those living south of Orlando. In the Panhandle few cars even have functioning turn signals, most roads are one lane, the sandspurs are too bad to wear flip flops, and there is absolutely nothing to complain about. lizzie
- AllworthExplorer IIOnce you are a Florida citizen you get all kinds of special benefits:
You don't have to use turn signals anymore.
You can drive very slowly in the left lane.
You can wear black socks with your flip flops.
You can complain endlessly about everything.
Keep Florida green; bring Yankee money! - koda55ExplorerYour insurance does not have to be in Florida. My insurance company is USAA out of Texas.
- GMandJMExplorerAfter three years snow-birding here, I recently went through the same process (DL, vehicle regisration, etc) and am now officially a Floridian. Kirk at MyRVMail was very helpful. He also assisted with registering to vote in the state and national elections.
No written or driving test is required if you have a current driver's license from any state except Alabama.
Buying a license plate was not inexpensive - around $300 to $400 depending on the vehicle. And insurance was more expensive here (but there is no deductible for glass, which might be a good thing.)
All in all, it was a fairly painless process.
Gun classes are readily available if you want to get a CCW license here. Out-of-state licenses are onlly valid for 90 days (or so I'm told).

Just changing your address on a couple of credit cards is not going to fly. You have to show utility bills with your address on it.
No utility bills(water/electric) proof needed in FL.
First have a FL. mailing address and then have any bank account statements, DirecTV, cell phone bills sent to that address.
Don't forget to have vehicle Insurance changed to FL. Address before getting plates.
Needed paper work to get FL. Licence
