Jeep Liberty 2011 Tow Package

User guide tells me with the Tow Package I can pull 5000 pounds, without 2000. How true is this? Will I kill my car if I pull a 4000 pound trailer without this? Is up hill the problem??????

What is in the Tow Package and how much should it cost me??? Thanks anyone.
  • Folks..."the difference" that he mentions is not that unusual. 2000 lbs no brakes, a lot more with brakes. 2000 lbs without WD, somewhat more with WD. Go do some reading in the owners manual of your own TV.

Now, as to the question if a Liberty really CAN tow 5000 lbs...I'm thinking that's pretty questionable.
  • It could also include gear ratio. I know when I was getting my Rubicon the gearing made a difference.
  • For my Durango it was 2500 pounds vs 6000 to 7500. The biggest piece of that one was a heavy duty cooling system, but also included electrical system and suspension upgrades, and the hitch and wiring.

Your Fiat/Chrysler dealer should be able to tell you what is in the tow package, and how much it costs to install after the fact rather than as alternative pieces during production. Then you can decide what to add, either from the Chrysler parts or aftermarket. It still won't change the tow rating.

Not sure about the gassers, but the diesels can do it.
  • I towed an 18' 3660# HTT with my liberty and it did a good job towing. Towed from DC to tadoussac Qe. Just remember the RPMs will be a little over 4000 going up some inclines but that is normal for most gas engines. Yes it had the tow package. Libertys are strange the tow package Includes an electric cooling fan as well as the engine driven fan, larger shroud, power steering cooler and the hitch. You will have to add the brake controller but it is wired for one.

It's true in theory. If the vehicle is properly equipped (tow package) and, it has NO aftermarket accessories, NO cargo, NO passengers, and the driver only weighs 150 lbs, it could pull that 5000 lbs.

In the real world, we don't tow without accessories, passengers, pets, and cargo. And, many of us weigh more than 150 bs.

As you add weight to the vehicle, with accessories, people, pets, and cargo, it's max tow capacity and available payload are going down, pound for pound. IE: If you put 600 lbs of people and cargo in the vehicle, it's max tow capacity numbers would be 4400 with and 1400 without. A weight distributing hitch, would eat another 100 lbs out of the payload and tow rating.
