Layout of campgrounds

Just started getting into camping one thing I noticed is the campsites are all in a row right on top of each other. Its really frustrating. They almost look like refugee camps.
Does anyone else feel this way and is it a matter of just looking to find the best campgrounds.
I like the state campgrounds they seem more speadout but im wondering if they are a little more wild do to maybe not as much rules about noise
  • Yep, I've noticed it, very common at least in the north east.
But, as mentioned, it's to make it profitable.
They're not too bad if you go during off times. Definitely not during the three major weekends of the summer.
That's why we stay home and avoid the crowds/traffic.
  • We camp mostly at State or Country campgrounds and on occasion find that issue. Doing it enough to one learns what to look for. One of the best we've found is at Cape Disaapointment in the State of WA. They are done in a circle with the sights spurred off from the left. Easy backing and privacy from those next to you. Google Earth can help and I use it in an area for the first time.
  • Jarata,

You are correct, but the real answer is profit. The park owners need to get as many units as they can on as little land a possible to have the best ROI. It is absolutely the worst in areas with high taxes (the east and west coast). State and federal campgrounds do not have this issue. Though some are still more like parking lots than anything any rational person might refer to as camping.

  • From your description, it sounds like you are referring to an RV park. Most always the density is needed to provide the profits. Most state and federal campgrounds have more room to spread out the spaces, and they were'nt originally designed for profit IMHO.
