Leaving house unattended

We are going on our first extended trip (for us - 2 months) - Do you shut off your house water and propane or leave them on while gone? Electricity is a no brainer but was wondering about the others.
Thanks in advance for advice.
  • the no brainer about electricity is that the freezer is full and needs power to keep the beef cold. What is OP?
  • We turn off water and hot water heater. Our house is all electric so no gas to worry about. We shut down or unplug any non-essential electrical appliances. In summer we turn off AC, in winter we set heat down low.
  • What's a 'no brainer' about electricity? Are you really here OP?
  • Just turn off water and HWH. Turn furnace down. I also have security camera's set up.
  • Whenever we leave our S&B unattended for a weekend or more we have a list of things we do.

    - I close the blinds on my shop to keep prying eyes away.
    - disconnect the openers on the garage doors and lock the doors closed with padlocks through the lock mechanism
    - the water gets shut off to prevent leaks/floods
    - turn off/down hot water heater- this is usually done for longer trips longer than a weekend
-advise a friend/neighbour we are leaving and for how long, they will look after our place and do things like pick up mail and flyers, shovel the walkway, water the plants etc.
    - some people turn down the heat to save energy
  • We leave water to the house on, but shut valves to toilets and washing machine. If we were on private water and a propane tank, we would shut everything down. During cold weather, gas heat stays on very low, hot weather, AC is on and set high. Pilot light in gas water heater keeps it from freezing. Depends on your location, and circumstances.
  • Always turn the water off at the meter, once had a friend that left his on for a month and came home to a house "under water"....their ice maker line broke and there was 4 - 5 inches of water through out the house....Gas was never a problem and as the pilots would all have to be re-lite we always left it on
  • If its going to be cold, set furnace thermostat to 50 55. If not, turn off water heater, water, etc and head out.
  • If there's no one available to check your house for you, I would shut them off, especially the water.
  • We always shut the house water off. No point in risking a damaging leak.
    happy trails to you
