Live in Georgia; register in Georgia?

I am selling my class A to an RVing newbie, who is wondering where to register the coach. She lives in Georgia, but is thinking of trying to register it in North Carolina to save some fees. I'm not even sure that'll work. Does she have to register in her home state? I would think so, but I thought I'd run it by here and see if anyone has any knowledge about that.

thanks-

Since the CA plates will stay on the coach until it is registered in whatever state the buuyer chooses to register it in, if the plates/registration is current, no "transit permit" should be required.

Must be different in CA. When I sell a vehicle here in SC, I must turn in the plates to the SC DMV. The buyer is responsible for a temporary plate.

    CA---plates stay on vehicle
That is WHY it is very important to fill out 'Notice of Transfer' form and turn into CA DMV.

The Notice of Transfer and Release of Liability relieves you of responsibility for parking and/or traffic violations and civil or criminal actions involving the vehicle after your date of sale. Your name, however, will not be removed from the DMV’s records until the new owner submits the vehicle title to the DMV for transfer of ownership, and pays the appropriate fees, and completes all transfer requirements.
  • You are selling the motorhome to someone. Let them figure out registration issues. MYOB!

  • It has always been my understanding that you register in the state of residence. We bought a trailer in In. and were required to register it in our home state. This is a recount of my personal situation and not intended to be legal advice nor advice for the questioner.

If the buyer does not have an address in North Carolina, it is very doubtful that NC will allow her to register the coach there. If she did manage to work around the system, it is quite likely she could never take the coach into Georgia!
    DrewE is absolutely correct:
KNOW the applicable laws of both states.
COMPLY with the laws of both states.
DOCUMENT your compliance with the laws.
That is the ONLY proper advice to give in this situation, IMO.
  • The only advice I'd give is to study the laws, follow them, and document that they are being followed. I very much suspect that will basically mean registering the motorhome in Georgia.

As the seller, your responsibility ends with transferring ownership. It may be neighborly to help the buyer obtain a transit permit from CA so they can drive home. Beyond that, let them figure out what needs to be done in their situation.
  • Unless the new buyer has a residence in NC, I don't think she can register it there. GA yearly registration fees are based on the value of the vehicle. With our Class C, it is based on the value of the E450 Chassis. Not sure if it works the same on a Class A or not. Unless it is a high-end Motorhome (million dollar +), I don't think the fees will be expensive.

In the state of GA, vehicle registration is due on the title's first listed owner's birth date. When registering a used vehicle, there is a $20 title transfer fee. Then on the registered owner's birthday they pay the yearly registration.

I agree with Bumpy and Mfan - give no advice.
