Looking for a newish Newmar Dutch Star. What length is best?

I have been planning to get an RV and explore the US full-time. Well, mainly to Science Fiction and Maker Conventions.

I had been thinking of an older (2000-2005) Newmar Dutch Star, but assume my rich Uncle died and I now have $200,000-$300,000 to spend, and still have enough to support myself and a small family if I wish.

The newer Dutch Stars are from 37+ - 40+ feet long. Is there a problem finding sites for the longer ones or should I stick to under 40 feet?

And should I be looking for something other than Newmar? I still want a diesel because I eventually want to get a toyhauler travel trailer to haul behind. I really want a shop and I can't find a toyhauler class A that I like.

Any hints? Things happened quickly and I'd like to be into the RV as soon as possible.

  • We have a 32 foot coach. IMO, it is just about right.
However, if we were to go back to full timing, we would definitely want a washer/dryer. Our 32 footer does not have room for it, so we would have to go to about 36 foot. I simply do not want anything bigger than that. That is my personal opinion, I don't have to justify it.
As for Forest Service campgrounds, the ones we go to only have one or two sites each that our 32 footer will fit in, and there are no reservations, strictly first come, first served. If the site you need if taken, too bad, so sad, get on down the road!
  • If you want 40 feet or more I assume that you have decided you do not want to plan on state or federal campsites.
And there are some of each that larger RVs fit. Just do not count on it.
  • For practical considerations, the difference between 37' and 40' is not worth worrying about.

You need to check the states you want to travel to make sure you can pull a toyhauler trailer behind you motorhome.

If I were you I'd just purchase a toyhauler in the first place.

We had a 2004 40' Newmar and didn't find any problem getting into campsites. We used public parks 95% of the time. However, you're definitely going to have issues trying to park both a motorhome and a toyhauler on a site. You're not going to be able to back into any places.

Keep in mind that the longer the wheelbase, the smoother the ride.
  • Look at floor plans and see what will work best for you/your family. Consider if you'll need a desk or bunks or more than one bathroom.

You'll have less concern about weight if you choose a tag (for the most part). But, you might also have less space underneath to carry stuff.

As Roadpilot noted, you can usually somewhere to stay in most areas even in a larger coach. (Just not every state and federal park though.)

Make sure you find the factory sticker for the GVWR and such information. Check the date codes on the tires so see how old they are. And don't let a salesperson talk you into a coach you know is not right for you, just because it's a "good deal".

Good luck and let us know what you decide on.
  • We've had a 40' and 45' MH's and never had a problem finding a spot anywhere we'd like to stay. Our 40' was a little short on rear axle extra capacity, which is why we bought the 45' with the tag. We could tow a large trailer or put a big motorcycle on the back.

I would also consider Tiffin and Monaco, although there's nothing wrong with a Dutcvh Star.
  • Your biggest choice there will be if you want a tag axle or not. Stability, more carrying ability. vs. more tires to buy and larger tolls. Newmar puts tags on some at 40' and all after that. I had a Moutain Aire for 11 years and loved it.
