Ric, Ihave only been doing this since 1989 and we've not put many miles on due to a seven year hiatus taking care of the DMIL. Now that we're back we gone to AK without a towed and for the last 10 years or so we've been towing a Suzi, we now have 2 of them. One is a sidekick and the other a Grand Vitara Premium. The GV is fully loaded and goes almost anywhere, it's not a rock hopper but I'll put up against any factory 4X4 with all the amenities. You just need experience. We have criss crossed the US and Canada pulling both Suzi's with our 1990 Bounder with a 454 cid engine. If you have to go up the Rockies or the Sierra at 605 mph you'll need a big diesel, if you don't mind 45 mph gassers work.
I hope others have told you the same thing, then again if you want one of the best and have the big bucks, go ahead but rend a gasser and then rent a diesel and compare. That's a lot of money to plunk down without looking around and trying one out
