Oops...

First, thanks to everyone for my RV education here on RV Net Forums. I've been reading and learning for about three years before I got the TV and TT. So far, the worst I've done has been to try to drive away with the electric trailer jack still extended. I'm on my first RV trip, been gone 86 days so far, with maybe another 25 to 30 before I get back home. I left Myrtle Beach in May, went out West, up to Canada and Alaska. It's been a great trip! Everything was going great until Sunday night....

I arrived at the Whistler CG in Jasper National Park in Alberta, got my campsite and was driving to the site about 10 PM. Pitch black! I was driving between 5 and 10 mph with my bright lights on. On their gravel road. The SUV and my headlights didn't see anything, but I must have either hit a pothole or something. When I got to the site, I looked under the trailer and found both the grey and black water gate valves just dangling and the 1 to 2 gals of black water draining out onto the gravel.

I went back to the kiosk and they were very nice, gave me a refund for the first night and another site for the next two nights and I took off for Hinton about 45 miles away to get the valves repaired/replaced. Went to Cars RV and they have been great. They had to order a new black tank from Oregon, the 90 degree elbow was broken on the grey water tank and they think they can reuse it. Everything else they had in stock. It will take 4 to 5 days for the black tank to ship, go through customs and get here. So, I've extended my trip another week. Could be worse.

I thought I had "Trip Interruption" insurance with AAA and Coach Net. AAA says no and Coach Net says, "Yes, but...." IF the tow vehicle or the trailer was involved in an accident I'd be covered, BUT because it was road debris --- NO!

I mention this so that you might check your policies and what it may or may not cover. Cars RV has been very nice. They hooked me up to a 30 Amp power supply and letting me sleep in my unit and use their washroom while they are open during the day while waiting for the repairs. They also are going to get me setup with a local ironworks shop and have them install a skid to protect the valves in the future.

Sorry to hear about your troubles, but it doesn't sound too bad. We have Trip Interruption with AAA Plus with RV, but like Coach Net it only comes into play after an accident, not a breakdown.

OK, I will post a review. Service so far has been great!

  • I just left Whistlers on Sunday morning... there are no curbs in the park.

To original poster, sorry to hear of your troubles but it sounds like you have the ability to be flexible with your time, so enjoy your unintended stop and then enjoy the rest of your trip... ;)

BTW... Don't know what your plan is when you leave but the Ice Fields Parkway is quite spectacular. If it works for your route, I recommend it.
  • No, there were no curbs on the gravel road... The SUV tracked fine, no potholes or anything. As I said, could have been a LOT worse.
