OOPS !

I had convinced my self that I did not need a Ram Cummins , so I went in to buy a Ram 2500 Hemi . I came out with a 2014 long bed ,crew cab , Cummins ,4x4 . This is my 5th Cummins over a twenty year period . I do not need one , as I ain't gonna go nowhere . I traded in a 07 5.9 quad cab . I had bought the 07 in 2009 for $18,000 off of my local bank , a repo with 27,000 miles on it . We added 102,000 more miles . The dealer gave me $23,000 for trade-in off of the sticker price of $50,000.
I got it but still do not know what to do with it !
We have tried twice this year to go to Nova Scotia , first time we got 94 miles and had to come back . Second time we made 254 miles before having to come back ! My wife , a reg nurse is medical surrogate for family members and always responds . Will try again next week end , maybe !

    My 2001.5 Ram at 115K is getting broken in and getting the best towing mileage it ever has gotten. Gave it a new set of shoes the other day. Chris

    If you trade, you don't have a problem with taxes, other than the reduced cost of the newer vehicle. With the trade in of the old truck at $23,000, the new truck will only have a depreciable value of around $27,000. Now if you sell for cash, than the tax man will come up and grab you. If the truck had been depreciated to $-0-, then the $23,000 sale price would be treated as ordinary depreciation recapture income and might cause some tax bite.

    Still running my '97 2500 CTD - a little over 200k miles on it and still going strong. DW is all over me to get a new one because the old gray mare (truck, not DW) :) shed her clearcoat and "looks embarrassing" ... I keep telling her that a one-time payment for paint job is way cheaper than those new truck payments.

    Have to admit, I do lust after those new purty trucks I see out there. :)

    Full disclosure - I used to trade trucks as soon as they were paid off - did like those new trucks. However, after many years of no payments, I sure like that, too. However, that makes more ammo for DW to lobby for a new truck - "You USED to buy new trucks, why not now?"

    When I tell her I'm older and smarter now, she says "well, 50% right ain't too bad" :)

    I trade in my trucks every 4-5 years because I like to drive a new truck.
    I use them for work so they get a lot of mileage.

    wonderingbob...congradulations on the new truck. The new Ram's are really nice. How do you like the coil rear suspension? Does it ride better than the leaf springs when empty? We live out in the country and my old dodge is pretty bouncy when empty.
    Post some pictures for us to drool over when you get a chance.

    I don't know about the OP but mine is still strong after 11yrs. Just finished about 3weeks of touring "The Rock" towing our 30ft Carriage. This included a trip up the great northern peninsula through Gros Morne park, for this who have been there.

    The there's peole like me that have two diesel trucks. I can only drive one at a time, so why do I need two?

    Uhhh..... because I wanted another one. It gets better mpg than the 2012 Jeep JKU-R that it replaced.
    And it's far more comfortable to drive all day than that *&@#^*@&*!^! Jeep.

    One of the reasons that I traded so often was because of income tax and depreciation . Those in business will know that if you depreciate an auto down to " zero "then what ever that you get as a trade in value will be considered as income and taxable . The trick is try to get the depreciated value and the trade close to each other . No problem anymore as I have no income , so I can trade just cause I want to .

    Many times on here people will jump on ya with both feet cause they think that they know more about what you should have done than you do , but , there is no better explanation better than " Cause I Want To "!

    Congrats and wishing you many miles of happy travels with it. I've owned four Cummins Rams. Each had new Ram features I wanted and all ran like new trucks when I traded. Then the Hemi Ram for the hot rod I was missing. Then the Superduty for one last twin I-beam Ford. They're all good.
