Returning to RV's after 10 years planning first trips

Having just purchased a Safari Cheeta 36' diesel and planning to tow a Honda FIT we are looking forward to our first major trip in June to Maryland and the Philadelphia area. This is our first diesel. I am looking for recommendations for interesting places and good stops. We are thinking of spending some days either near the Delaware Water Gap or on the Jersey Shore (some years ago we had one of our best vacations in our old Bounder at Camp May).
I've purchased the Rand McNally GPS and I know the Good Sam trip planner's capabilities but I would love to hear about personal recommendations.

  • Thanks for all the replies. We have a 2010 FIT that already had the Blue OX base plate installed by the previous owner. It is an automatic.
I lived for 18 years in Southern Maryland and know the Delmarva and the Eastern Shore very well. I like the Lancaster ideas, I used to do the dog show circuit pulling a trailer throughout that whole area. We are visiting people in the Philly area so I am looking with that as a center.
Appreciate the heads up on the KOA..I would have considered that.
  • I have nothing to offer other than to say we have the Rand McNally GPS and it's the FIRST one that has been "right on" with our travels this winter. We haven't been to the east coast with it, but we're REALLY happy with it. :) And BTW, that's after we had bought 3 others...........BIG improvement.

We stayed at the Delaware Water Gap KOA is East Stroudsburg PA, just southwest of the Gap. A short drive up Rt 209 gets you to the Gap. It was just OK - typical KOA. They put us in one of the newer sites up on the hill. Concrete pad, but not a lot of trees.

Just booked a spot there for August. Hopefully it will be OK. Taking my 60+ old brother camping for his birthday. We two brothers are going to try to relive a hiking/camping trip up to Sunfish Pond on the Appalachian trail - but come back to more comfortable bed this time. Did that back when I was 10 or 11 and he was in his 20s.
He's in better shape than me - so I better get outta my desk chair and walking! :)

  • We camp host at Point Lookout SP in Maryland during the month of June. It has lots of history, the Chesapeake Bay and the Potomac River, a couple of good size lakes, a beach, a fishing pier and you are within a couple hours of the DelMarVa peninsula. It's a couple hours into DC. We drive up and hop on the METRO and visit the Smithsonian, zoo and other touristy things.
  • My Backyard!
Plenty of places to head. Lancaster PA area is our favorite, Plenty of great Campgrounds and lots of various attractions.

For me, the Traffic is too heavy to hit "The Jersey Shore" often, but I do like the Cape May Area.
If you want specifics, let us know I'll subscribe to this thread.

We also tow z Fit. Is yours Manual or Automatic - and what year? The newer automatics can't be towed "as is" four down. Ours is a 2007, great towed.

Just got back from Lancaster this past week - was a fun relaxing trip. Clcik my blog link below if you want to read some great places. Congrats on getting back into the "RVing Groove!"
