route from philadelphia area to orlando

Hi all, we are taking our first long trip traveling with a 37 foot travel trailer. any recommendations for the route to take from philadelphia area to orlando. we are leaving around 6pm next wednesday stopping in dumfries virginia for the first night (trying to avoid DC traffice). We prefer not to take the William Preston Lane bridge as it looks a little frightening, but know we cannot take the Harbor Tunnel. Any suggestions? Thanks!

I guess it is true . . . I am the odd ball ??? I travel every couple of weeks from Bucks County to Richmond..
Over the past few years , 95 has become much better.. Don't get me wrong , you can still get corked in traffic , but your chances are much smaller now..
I take 95 to Wilmington , 495 around.. back to 95.. to 695 EAST around Baltimore.. crossing the Francis Scott Key Bridge.. back to 95.. around/threw DC.. right down to Richmond..

The key is what time to go around DC.. I have found that leaving my house around 9:00 am puts me into Richmond ( while towing) right around 1:30-2:00.. 4-1/2 to 5hrs..

We'll be odd-ducks together. I greatly prefer just taking I-95 through. The OP is leaving at 6pm on a Wednesday night and should coast past Baltimore and DC.

Thank you all, is the bay bridge tunnel the same thing as the bay bridge (aka William preston lane bridge) we were trying to avoid that as it looks a little scary for us as newbies. Thanks for any further info.

    No, they're 2 separate things.

The Bay Bridge (William Preston Lane Bridge) is in Maryland.

The Bay Bridge Tunnel is in Virginia.
  • Several (hundred) posts on this topic in the Roads and Routes forum. Search on Maine to Florida, New Jersey to Florida and Baltimore tunnels.

  • A third vote for the Bay Bridge Tunnel. It's an awesome ride for sure.
  • I like the route through Delaware and down the Eastern Shore. Yes there are traffic lights but I find that route more relaxing.
    What Bill and Kate said.
  • I you want to miss the whole Baltimore/Washington/Richmond scene, you can go thru Delaware and down the Eastern Shore to the Chesapeake Bay Bridge Tunnel, then take Route 58 over to hit I95 at Emporia, VA. It is a much easier, relaxing drive than I95, but maybe a little longer. We go that all way all the time, but we are leaving from Cape May County, and it is easy for us to hit the Cape May/Lewes Ferry. Screws up your Dumfries plans, but there are some nice campgrounds near both the ends of the Bridge/Tunnel .....
