San Diego-Yellowstone-Crater Lake-Tahoe

Good Morning!

I am planning an ambitious trip for summer 2017 and the word is that I need to start planning now. I plan to stop at Bryce, Zion, and Teton National Parks on the way up to Yellowstone. From YS I would love to make it all the way to the Oregon coast but not enough time. I was thinking aiming for Crater Lake Oregon from Yellowstone. I would then make my way down from Crater lake to Tahoe and then back home. The drive from Yellowstone its to far so I need a cool mid point to stop? Any recommendations for stops in between Yellowstone and Carter Lake? I am traveling with a 27ft travel trailer and would also would not mind safest routes. Thank You all in advance! Happy Trails!

  • Mountain Home RV Park in Mountain Home ID is a nice park for a stop over between Yellowstone and Crater Lake. There is also a campground in Burns OR and in Bend OR there is the campground at the fairgrounds. For Crater Lake, Collier Memorial State Park has hookups. US20 is a good road.
  • From the town of West Yellowstone to Klamath Falls, OR is 800 miles.

You have a few stopping options.

Get to Idaho Falls, ID then Twin Falls, ID and on to I-84 then pick up Hwy 20 at Ontario, OR just beyond Boise and take it to Oregon Hwy 97. Head south and as stated a very nice state park is Collier Memorial at Chiloquin, Or. (electric) Or continue on to Crater Lake NP and stay in its campground (dry camping).

    Some stopping places would be:

Three Island Crossing State Park, Glenns Ferry, ID - 318 miles leaving approx. 480 miles to go.

Bruneau Dunes State Park, ID at Mountain Home, ID - 345 miles leaving 455 miles to Crater Lake area.

Ambassador RV Park at Caldwell, ID just beyond Boise - 411 miles leaving 390 miles to go.

Once you're on Hwy 20 there a nice place near Burns, OR called Crystal Crane Hot Springs (you could take a relaxing soak) - 565 miles leaving 245 miles to get to Crater Lake area.

Here are a couple reviews of the first two parks:

  • x2 on Mountain Home RV Park or - if you prefer state parks, Three Island Crossing or Bruneau Dunes. The state parks have electric & water hookups. Mountain Home is a really nice FHU park. Would make a good laundry stop in between the national parks as well

You do need to make reservations for Yellowstone especially and the Tetons well ahead of time. If you are camping within the parks, then the timeframe for those reservations is definitely now.

Good luck with the plans & the trip!
  • We just came through the Bend to Crater Lake area. Stayed a couple of nights at LaPine State Park (full hookups) just outside of the town of LaPine and then spent a few nights at Diamond Lake campground (Forest Service, no hookups, but available showers/restrooms/water). Diamond Lake is only about four miles from the north entrance to Crater Lake NP. There was road construction in the park, but otherwise good roads and easy to get around.

It takes about five hours or so to get from Ontario to the Bend area. You would definitely want to find a place to stop between YNP and Crater Lake. There is a small RV park in Fruitland ID (Neat Retreat), but I'm not sure what kind of availability they normally have. Be sure to top off with gas when you hit Burns, as there isn't anywhere to get fueled up between Burns and Bend.

    Have a great trip.
  • We stayed this year at Mazama Village camprpground inside Crater Lake NP, inputs about 7 miles from Rim Village. I would stay there again without hesitation. Mostly dry camping, a few places have power (I'm sure they reserve quick). At this campground at least they only reserve half the sites and have plenty for most any length. Our rig is a 30' 5er, we had a long pull through site with pavement.

If you have the time and are going through Burns, check out the Steens Mountain. A few places to camp close by, then best for scenery is Page Springs (all dry camping)
