Service nightmare, is this typical???

Okay, so prior to leaving on our two month trip and getting your advice on the satellite hookup I decided to call the service department at dealership I just bought my rv from and have them do the satellite hookup and put on my tire minder for me since I am not the mechanical type. I called last week and was told to bring it in Tuesday morning and it would take a couple of days. I was planning on leaving on Thursday afternoon so that was fine. I took it in Tuesday morning and noted that a piece of edging had come off (which just needed to be stapled back on) and that the license plate holder was defective (missing a screw and the little plastic part it screws into), so could the please fix those two things as well. I call this afternoon to see if it was ready and they have not even looked at it!. I talked to two people prior to talking to the woman who does the scheduling who told me that they would need to have it five to ten days and that Tuesday was just the check in day. Then after they did the estimate they would have to send it into Jayco and it could take two months to get parts. She said they can't touch the cable without approval from Jayco. I say I will come get the RV and just run cables out the window because I am leaving tomorrow!. She says no we can't get the write up even done until late tomorrow at the easiest and "ma'am " I am trying to help you. This is not like taking your car in for repairs....

I have a call into the salesperson to see if he can assist. Is this typical?. Is this just "how it works"?.
  • That would not be acceptable. Why do people keep using dealers like that. If everyone that complained went to a different dealer these places would eat her change there ways or go out of business.
You say I hate the way they treat me so I'll dive them my business when they aren't busy. There are many good dealers out there.
  • The more I hear about these experiences, the more I appreciate the dealer I bought my trailer from. I've had it back to the dealer twice. Once to replace a broken valve under warrantee (took a week from drop off to pick up) and once to replace the corner trim I broke when I clipped a fence backing into a tight spot. The trim was replaced while I waited.
  • Dang Midnight Sadie. Wish I was heading to Ohio this summer!. Somehow I actually thought that was the service I would get...
  • how about my repair shop tue at 2pm I yanked the power cord out of it,s socket on the MH ,drove to my dealer showed him the problem ,HE SAID come back in a couple hours it,ll be fixed. they installed a complete new power box and billed me $129. now thats a dealer .and I didn,t buy it there.
  • Wow. As a follow up the salesman did not call back. I called back and there is no one to talk to me. Finally receptionist agrees to put me through to closest thing to manager around. Okay fine. I am on hold until 5:57 pm at which point the phone is picked and then hung up. I call back and even though it is 5:59, closing time, no answer. It eventually goes to voice mail and I left a message that I will be there at 8 am to pick up my rv. Wow, just wow! Nice customer service. Guess I will just have Discount Tires do the tire minder, run the cable out the window and staple the dann trimming back on myself...even I can do that!. Then they can have it all August...save me the cost of storage, at least that is the upside, lol. Lucky thing I just got the Jayco survey today...
  • Yes, from my experience typical. As a result I do not take my RV to a dealership for service. I use and independent repair facility, or an independent specialty shop where the employees and owner have a vested interest in satisfying the customer. JMHO
  • Unfortunately yes. Not saying it's acceptable, but many of us have been down this road. You'll learn, never take your rig in anywhere near a trip. We've been forced to cancel trips for just about everything you mentioned.

If needing work and it can wait - we'll take it in a month or so after the season ends here. You still have to wait for parts and such.
But chances of getting pushed back because of new deliveries is less likely a issue.

Many times after our repairs were done we found damage the dealer did that wasn't there when dropped off. This meant it ended up staying longer. Honestly .... We've had ours tied up for a month at times.

Our MH when new was tied up at the Fleetwood factory in Indiana for 3 months before getting it back.

    Drop off with appointment
Takes a week to look at it
    Yep needs parts
Fight with approval from manufacturer or warranty company
That's another week or two to get approved
On back order for one to two weeks or more
Parts in - another week or more to get it back in the que
Fixed - weeks to months later
If your lucky they didn't damage something else
  • YES IT IS very typical
Pick it up take your trip.
When you come back have the dealer take care of the warranty problems.
For installations, non warranty items call a good mobile repair person.
Salesman can't help as you have already paid and they have your money
  • Yes it is absolutely typical at the majority of dealers, it's best to just learn to do the small stuff yourself or it will be sitting at the dealer mor than it is used. Sorry
