Shopping for a small TT

Hello, new to the forum and first post...

Last year I bought a new 2014 Dodge Grand Caravan and opted for the factory tow group. This rates me for 3600 lbs. The group includes trany cooler, electronic load distribution and sway control along with a class II hitch with wiring harness. The only thing it didn't include was a brake controller, witch I will add when I buy a trailer. Wife is not interested in a tent trailer as she really wants something with a bathroom for those 2 am wake-ups :)

I am looking for a small TT and have seen several that would accommodate me, my wife and my 4 and 6 year old boys. By the numbers, it looks as though I can safely and legally tow a 2,800 to 3,000 lb TT even with the 4 of us as long as we don't go nuts with packing. I also have seen many, many similar and larger trailers on the road and at campsites being pulled by minivans. What scares me is how many people on various forums instantly scream about tranny failures and visions of the apocalypse as soon as you mention "Dodge Caravan". What I have noticed however is that all of those stories seem to concern much older Caravans.

So I would like to hear from people who own and use more recent Dodge Grand Caravans with the factory tow package... Does it work? Does it work well? I'm not looking to cross the rockies, just to move it a couple of hours down the road 4 or 5 times a season. TIA - Chris

  • What kind of Minvans did you see towing travetrailers? GM minivans are a whole different vehicle from a Chrysler.

A class II hitch cannot use a WDH. So there is a really good chance that hanging 400+ lbs off the rear of a Dodge Caravan will cause the rear of the van to drag, and the front to float. And yse I've seen that with them towing popups

A KZ Sportsmen Classic is about the best you can do to avoid a popup.
  • I don't think there are many minivan owners towing high walled RVs. The minivans have a 40sq ft frontal area limit at its 3600 pound rating. That's a popup. Here is one reference thread.

Your tongue weight limit is near 360 pounds, maybe 400. That's about 3000 pounds loaded, or well under 25000 pounds dry. This KZ 19BH would be pushing it assuming you would be happy living in that RV on a rainy day.

I urge you to stick with something low walled or use a more capable tow vehicle.
