When traveling with the 5ers, we always used a campground for a single night. That's what I missed about the motor home. For a single night in the motor home, we just stop where ever we happen to want to, ie. parking lot, roadside rest area, etc.
Just curious as to why you think that you cant do the same thing in your fiver?
We do most our vacations in the HOT summer time. So, we preferred to use the a/c. I didn't have a generator in the 5ers. We did occasionally do a parking lot stop-over with the 5er if it was cool enough. Our daughters were also younger, and with us then too.
We go to Oshkosh every year in July. I start the generator in the motor home when I leave my driveway, and don't shut it off til I'm parked in the campground at Oshkosh. We do that drive in a day & a 1/2. Generator runs the entire time.
Just personal preference I guess.austinjenna wrote:

Um..no, the first quote is mine..the second was from a reply...did you think I was asking myself a question and then answering it?.
This is what two quotes look like, sorry I thought you were quoting yourself. - austinjennaExplorer

But with conditions...one is that it will not remain hot all night and have to run the generator/air conditioner long after dark. Always good to check here or on the road for tips on your route. I too prefer restaurants or Walmart so I can kill some birds with one stone. I do not like rest stops for more than a brief rest. I don't want to take spot from trucker and they're noisy. I've seen truck parking completely full at times.
In general I'd prefer to find cheap rvpark. Just recently stayed at one near Blythe CA for about $20 per night on Passport America. Power, dump station etc.
At least what I've seen, in the great open parts of the USA there are quite a few simple, non resort type RV parks with pull-through sites. Often the rates are quite low due to location. Check out Passport America for your travel area and see if any of those parks would work for you. Check "notes" and cross check reviews to see if acceptable.
Also check public campgrounds..sometimes these are very reasonable. Especially in low-tourist areas. You can re-use the good spots on new vacations. - Sprink-FitterExplorer

Thanks, that makes perfect sense. I forgot about that generator! They sure are nice to have a built in one.

Flying J, I really don't like spending $30 +, just to catch 4-6 hours sleep, if you're tired enough, the lights & noise won't bother you.
Besides, you can grab a quick bite before hitting the road.
A quick bit to eat at Fly J's, good luck. - malexanderExplorer

I know a lot of people here say they just like to play it by ear and stop when they want to, but we've got a timeline set up and this is how we've discussed and planned. Works for us. And that's what matters right?
