What truck is needed to tow TT weighing 10k lbs.

I just put down a deposit on Jayco 32BHDS and in the usual style of putting the cart before the horse...I know neee to find a truck that can tow this 10k lbs beast

Looking for a used truck but just as I think I've found the right truck it turns out not to have the right engine or rear axle.

Can someone please tell me what truck I should be looking for? A truck that when I finally find it I will have no doubts about its capability to pull my TT.

Looked at Silverado 2500HD
Dodge Ram 2500
F250

But what engine is needed in each? Axle? Trannny?

Thaks

  • 3/4 ton truck is the F250/2500 flavor? Is the 5.7L engine too small?

Seems like some will recommend a half ton now days but I prefer the truck to have much more capacity to be safe as well as a bigger stronger engine.

For me it will always be a Diesel, manual trans and 1 ton axle.
    Overkill, probably.

Why would you want a manual trans? It just reduces your overall towing capacity. The auto transmissions out there today are far stronger than any clutch. I like driving a stick but, IMHO: for towing you are far better off with an auto trans.

    As always.... Opinions and YMMV.

Manual trans is pretty sweet for towing, and you're partially right. The only manual trans truck offered in the last 10 years has a clutch that seriously limits the trucks towing capacity, however there are a plethora of clutches available that will hold whatever power you can throw at them and the rest of the truck is considerably more capable than the factory clutch.

For the OP, you're right on track. A new(er) 3/4ton of any flavor or combo will tow a 10k trailer safely and easily. How fast you get up hills and what kind of fuel mileage you get depend on engine, gears and gas or diesel.
  • - That TT is ~10k lbs. empty
    - Truck will have a genny , wife and son
    - packed with most likely 1k lbs in gear in the trailer

I think thats pretty realistic. Please feel free to recommend where you see I may be mistaken

So a Silverado 2500HD sounds like the right choice. 6.0L
  • Any of those 3 with a diesel will do, regardless of the axle ratio. If you go with a gasser, all 3 would get the job done but something with 4.10 axle or better would be best.
  • 10,000 empty or loaded? In any case get the 1 ton truck with a long bed, and a automatic, you will be happier longer, with less worries. The cost for a 1 ton vs a 3/4 ton is insignificant.

  • The most important thing you need to know about the truk is it's payload rating. To figure out what payload rating you need start Here
  • What else will be in the truck? Just you? Or, are you carrying a family of 6, pets, gear, a 4 wheeler, generator, and some fire wood?
Likely a 2500 series truck, gas or diesel, will be just fine but you may run out of payload capacity if you load the truck heavy.
You really don't have much drive train choice. Only the Dodge is even available with a manual. Ford and GM give you a choice of 1 automatic transmission. Your engine choice is gas or diesel, either will work. You want low (numerically high) axle gears for that much weight. GM gives you very little choice, Ford more so. If it's a GM diesel there is no choice, they are all 3.73. If you get a GM gas you can have 4.10 which I would recommend. Not sure on RAM axle choices.
  • I have the same trailer (2016). I had a 2012 GMC 2500HD and it towed it just fine. It had the 6.0L gasser and I can't recall the gears but I will check if I have it around somewhere. I have since changed trucks to my current 2011 F350 with the 6.7 and it tows like a dream. I didn't need the diesel but this truck was too good to pass up. I would not have wanted to pull this with my previous half ton.
