- toedtoesExplorer IIII bought a really old one, so my expectations out the door were less than had I bought one less than 10 years old. However, the basics still hold true:
1. All rubber, including fuel lines.
2. Dealer (but had purchased my prior TT from private and had no preference).
3. Took it to the mechanic after purchase (this is where the age of my clipper made my decision different - knew i'd need engine work at that price point and age so didn't worry).
4. Most common issues were just catching age related failures as they showed up.
5. Nope. Paid just right for the rig and it's condition. However, at that age, it's pretty easy to determine proper price. - Tal_ILExplorerI have bought two used motorhomes - 1 class C and 1 class A.
What immediate problems did you have with it?
I had no immediate problems with either one.
Did you buy it from a dealer or privately?
I bought both privately, off Ebay and out of state.
Did you have it inspected by a mechanic prior to purchase?
No, I communicated with seller about condition by email and phone. No money changed hands until I arrived and inspected before pickup.
What seems to be your most frequent mechanical problem with the motor home out on the road?
I had no frequent mechanical problems. The couple of repairs I had were normal for units of their age.
Did you find out later that you paid too much for it?
The class C was 30 years old when I bought it for $2,500. I used it for 5 seasons and sold it to a neighbor kid for $50. He and his buddies used it for hunting and fishing trips for 2 years and sold it for $500.
The class A was 16 years old when I bought it. I used it for 5 seasons and traded it on our current unit. Dealer allowed $2,000 more than I bought it for.
Overall, I was very careful when I bought and things worked out fine. - ol__yellerExplorer II

Tires, my mechanic pointed it out to me prior to purchase and they were replaced under a tire recall.

To answer your questions
I had No immediate problems
I bought from a dealer, and got all the service records for the RV from the day it went into service
I did the inspection and looked over the service records and asked questions, all were answered to my satisfaction. If you are not comfortable doing this a then a inspection by a mechanic is a good idea.If they have any objections, run away.
In 5 years and close to 14000 miles I have encountered only small problems but nothing major and no frequent mechanical problem.
I found that I did not pay too much, just the opposite,I got a very good deal.
