48 inch wide rolls of Eternabond tape?

Apparently there are such things as 48 inch by 50 feet wide Eternabond rolls.

This gets me wondering... for a rig that is 100 inches in width, would three overlapped layers of this ensure the roof is well sealed for a long time, assuming one is able to get the Eternabond properly pressed into place around the items in the roof (vents, skylights, the A/C, etc.), as well as having it overlap the sides by an inch or two?

In theory, this would be interesting, but each 48" x 50' roll is about a grand in price, so it definitely isn't a cheap idea, nor likely a doable one, due to the need to make sure Eternabond is pressed into place at every inch.
  • Re-roofing with wide Eternabond would be doable, but it would cost more than a conventional EPDM DIY re-roof kit. The labor would likely be similar anyway.

Kind of like aircraft pilots landing on short but, really wide runways? :B

  • My first thought is that it's the edge seams and utility protrusions that have more of a potential for leaking. With the wide rolls of tape you are paying for, covering areas that are probably not ready to leak is a lot of "extra" money, IMHO.
  • 48" by 50' Eternabond is definitely not a one man job. :)

The 4" stuff can be tricky.
  • In theory Communism is pretty good too! I like where your head is at, but I cannot imagine it would be very easy to do. You would need to literally strip off everything that projects off your roof (AC, vents, skylights, antenna, etc) in order to roll out the Eternabond. That kinda defeats the purpose, because once you put those things back on, now you have to re-tape those joints.

Interesting idea, but I don't see it as very practical.
  • As sticky as the narrow stuff is, I can't even imagine working with 48" wide rolls.
