- SeniorfirsttimeExplorerRVMIke. Another bungy user. How did you guys attach the cord to the wheel and what did you attach it to?
- SeniorfirsttimeExplorerBird, I don't remember my 65 having a steering damper.
- SeniorfirsttimeExplorerTom, your 70 was a generation up from mine and I'm not familiar with the Baja but it sounds like you had a keeper.
- RVMikeExplorerSecond the bungy. I towed mine for 2000 miles and one day I thought the MH was coming apart. Put a bungy on it and went another 5000 with no problems. Best tow car ever. Was a Baja conversion at 1800 lbs so no brakes. Did not know it was there until a turn and I could see it.

Im with yall also. I grew up in a VW dealership and opened my own VW shop when I got out of school.
wolfe, that is funny. I cut my teeth on them too. I still remember how to pull an engine in under ten minutes.:B We had the same experience as rv2go, they didn't track well being flat towed.
To answer your question, make sure you have a good steering dampner and use a bungy on wheel and go! - Tom_BarbExplorerOurs was a 70 Baja, but we towed it every where we went camping for 10 years. simple to hook up. no brake stuff, no battery disconnects, no steering lock, just two suction cup lights as required. easiest towed ever.
Its demise was a rusted out floor pan and 600,000 miles, best car we ever had. - SeniorfirsttimeExplorerThanks Wolfe10 and rv2go. rv2go, did you need brake assist on the 64? Did you have to do anything to the transmission? Did you use a shift lock? Did you disconnect the speedo cable? And what did you do to steady the steering wheel? Was your wheel wobble due to mechanical problems or was it inherant with the Beetle? Did you use a standard tow bar? These and related questions are what I'm looking for answers to. Thanks again.

- rv2goExplorer III towed a 1964 VW Beetle. I had to use a bungee cord to apply a slight tension on the steering wheel in the straight ahead position. Otherwise, the front wheels wobbled. Other than that, it towed great behind my "C".
- wolfe10ExplorerHave seen a number of them towed 4 wheels down. No first hand experience.
But, if you have questions about your beetle, I worked my way through school turning wrenches on them. 1965 was the last of the 1200 CC 40 HP's. Went to 1300 for one year only (1966) and then to 1500 in 1967. Probably the fastest U.S. beetle ever, as it was pre emission, pre "big bumper.
