A hitch question

I have a question for the Hitch experts. First of all my tv is a 12 Silverado ext. cab short bed with the 5.3 V8 and 3:42 rear end. Today I just picked up a 2013 Gray Wolf 26BH with a dry weight of 4555 roughly and a dry tongue weight of 410 of course that's without the battery and propane which was on when I took delivery. My hitch is the 4.0 Equal-I-izer, I literally just picked it up today thus no cargo and I suspect a little lite on the tongue weight since I was completely empty. Coming home this evening and I might add it was terribly windy I experienced a little light in the back end feeling while towing with a pretty stiff cross wind. I didn't experience this with my past trailer at all but then it was always loaded.

Am I wrong to suspect its because I didn't have enough tongue weight or does it sound like an adjustment in the hitch. Everything looks perfectly level when hitched I might add. I appreciate your imput.

  • You should adjust your L brackets so the bars lay flat on them and not on the leading or trailing edge. Then you adjust for tension by the amount of tilt in the hitch head.

  • bikendan you are completely correct about having the 4-point Equal-i-zer however correct me if i'm wroing you can still take too much weight off the back end with the bars. Am i not correct??

Yes, the height of the L bracket that the bars rest on serve the same purpose as links on a chain. The height of the brackets need to be adjusted just the same as chain links would. Load the trailer first then set up the hitch or else you'll have to re-adjust again once it's loaded.

Use a different link on the equalizer. You may be over lifting the rear.

i think the OP has a 4-point Equal-i-zer, which doesn't use chain links.

  • I also picked up my a new unit yesterday. Completely empty it does feel light like it doesn't have enough tongue weight. I also have the 4pt equalizer but pulling a 6000 dry weight.

I plan to load up for our first trip, pull a few miles and stop at a truck stop to check my WD calculation and make adjustments as needed. I think the dealership that set my up is not transferring enough weight up front, hence the light feeling in the back. Once it is completely loaded for a trip is the best time to check the hitch setup.

    Hope this helps.

That make's perfect sense, plus by the time I get a little more weight added up front in the RV hopefully will work. Thank You!
