Alabama camping locations

I will leave the cold UP of Michigan in March and April to head south. Instead of Florida this year I am thinking Alabama near the Gulf Shores area. Can anyone recommend a good resort for a longer term stay than over nights? Also, does anyone know of RV places in that area that rent Park Models?

Google Maps does not show 'all' the campgrounds/RV parks so don't rely solely on it. You need to use various sources.

We would highly recommend Gulf State Park - excellent sites. You inquired about renting a Park Model - I believe Gulf State Park has cabin rentals.
  • Paw's right. The panhandle differs substantially from the Florida of The Mouse. It really gets cold on the Gulf Coast east of Mobile. I've seen it snow around St. Augustine.

But when you're coming, the winter weather hopefully would have left. It's nice on the coast in the Spring and Fall.
  • Yes, do remember the Gulf Coast isn't in the tropics. They do have winter, just a much milder winter than places to the north.

You will still need sweaters, sweatshirts, long pants and jackets. But you won't likely see freezing weather often.

Have to pay attention to the weather, and be ready to go through the occasional (once or twice a winter) cold spell with a mild freeze.

One bit of advice. If you do happen to be there for one of those very rare occasions with snow and/or ice - don't go out driving. You might know how to handle the conditions - but no one else does - and everyone will be out to 'enjoy' the experience.
  • Sounds like a good plan, just remember there are much lower average temperatures in that area. Right now they are having morning temps in the 40's but some daytime highs in the 60's.
  • Bella Terra on Brinks Willis Road off 59 below Foley will also be one of the nicest resorts you will find.
  • Heritage Motorcoach Resort and Marina in Orange Beach is one of the nicest RV resorts you will ever find anywhere.
  • Gulf Shores State Park at 496 campsites is a mega park. At a fantastic location.

They have water, elec (50A, 30A & 20A connections) and sewer for $475, $500, $600 per month depending upon location from Nov-Mar. There is a laundry facility near the store.

If you are an Escapees member - Rainbow Plantation is nearby at $325 per month + electricity costs.

Almost all private parks are going to meter and charge for electricity.

Just looking at RV Park Reviews - I count nine RV parks along the Gulf Shores beach section, 13 more south of US-98, 10 more between I-10 and US-98.

There are two across the bay on Dauphin Island, and six more south of Mobile/I-10.

I don't know if Meaher State Park in Mobile Bay has weekly/ monthly rates.
  • As far as I'm concerned, you can't go wrong with the state park, but I know there are some campgrounds in Robertsdale and Foley, which are away from the shore area, but still close by.

Looks like a bunch of campgrounds between Pensacola and Gulf Shores...
