am/fm/cd changer issue

My Sony am/fm/cd changer has finally quit on the radio portion. CD and changer work fine. Of course this radio is no longer made. I guess that cd changers for the 10 cd system is not made at all anymore according to Sony!

I did find a new head for it on Amazon and figured it was worth a try, didn't change anything though. Checked the antenna input on back and its connected ok and roof antenna seems ok. What else is there to check....unless an internal issue...?
  • We removed all CD's from all of our vehicles. I can fit an easy 100 albums on a $10 nano USB. Smartphone streaming thru Bluetooth was the final straw. On some new Chrysler's they charge an extra $200 for a CD player.

If you really need a CD player highly recommend Crutchfield. Their selection is topnotch. Customer service is also great.

Likely is an internal issue. Chips are cheap and if you can find a technician to fix it is not that costly.

But you might look and find that there are other "Base units" (the Radio itself) that will work with your decade changer.
  • I'll tell you what my DGS told me, UTube. You can learn anything on UTube. I googled 2002 Ford 6 CD changer stuck or something like that. Up came a utube video on how to fix it. Try Google and UTube for info. On occation radios do fail and that's A LITTLE MORE DIFFICULT BUT IF THERE IS A COMMON OCCURANCE AND REPAIRABLE, utUBE WILL PROBABLY WORK FOR YOU. I'm not yelling, my laptop is in a strange position and I hit caps lock and not shift.

I would be checking the antenna and any connections to it. I've messed around quite a bit with 12V headunits and I've never encountered loss of radio without some other loss of function like CD player, etc. If the unit powers, you should be getting some sound from the radio tuner. Do you hear the typical AM hash when the volume is up and tuned to AM?

Lacking any response from radio function and a check of the potentiometers and fuses to be functional, a whole replacement, like Trackrig states, is not that much. If the mounting location is a larger space, like 3 DIN or 4 DIN, there are replacement bezel accessories that will allow for a seamless installation of a single or 2 DIN player. It might be possible to keep your changer to operate with a new headunit.
  • Had to change a radio / 6-CD player in a 2001 Ford Escape recently. Per Crutchfield, very few units made with 6-CD players anymore, everyone plugs some sort of device into the radio for their music. It was surprising how cheap a good replacement unit was for a unit that only held 1 CD, but we hardly used the CD player anyways.
