Any ideas for safe transport of spare gas for the gen?

Do you folks carry a generator and extra gas in cans? Where do you store the full gas can(s)during travel? I was originally planning to place them inside a Stanley Tool Box located in the bed of m...

Not for a Genny but anytime I transport fuel I use those portable red fuel containers bungied to the side of the truck bed. After a while the tanks turn pink, but I have never seen one burst due to heat YMMV.
