This thread has gotten so long, I've forgotten why the simplest for towing, best and most terrain versatile SUV in the world and namely the Jeep Wrangler won't fit the bill here?
Because the OP apparently wants a towed vehicle that gets 30 to 40 MPG or better. The Jeep Wrangler does not get that kind of MPG.
But then, neither does our PT Cruiser convertible that we tow on a dolly, nor does my Dodge 1500 that will be set up for towing this summer.
We all make our choices, then we have to live with them.
