Awning Shades

We're heading to AZ for Feb and Mar, having a small trailer we spend a lot of time outside. Moving campgrounds every week or 2 if it matters. I'm thinking it may be nice to have the shades for those times the awning is facing the afternoon sun.

Does anyone use these? Wondering how much of a hassle they are with the need to take in the awning fairly often.

If you use one, how do you anchor it to the ground, I see they come with a few cheap stakes.
  • We bought sun shade material from Lowes. My GF sewed on the little pieces, not sure what they are called, that slide in the awning groove. Sewed grommets in the bottom for tie down. We love it for privacy / shade. Seems like every plae we camp we have people asking where we got it.
  • I like to use my Care Free sun blocker when I have to face the afternoon sun, also the Side Blocker for when the sun moves to the side.

It slips into the groove in the awning roller and can be put up or down fairly easy,I didn't like the stakes and line to hold the corners down in windy conditions so I take along empty gallon water or soap bottles and fill with sand or water and use Ball Bungee cords to attach to the corners,if I put the awning out patio style I attach it to the legs with the Ball Bungees.

Still get the breeze and does not cut down the view that much, camping on south facing beaches here it really comes in handy.
  • We just got a Vista Shade awning screen from shadepro.net and installed it a couple of days ago. Wow, it really cuts down on heat from the sun. Looks great and is well made. A guy in a MH next to us saw it and ordered one right away!

Comes with 3 stakes and rope to tie down the bottom of the fabric. They also give you a bag of clips that attach to the upper piece of the screen for hanging string lights. There is an upper piece of the screen 2' high that stays attached to the awning tube and the lower piece gets zipped in place when you want it in place. The upper piece rolls up along with the awning fabric.

We shoulda bought one of these things a long time ago...
  • Thanks Dutchman, having a small 5th wheel, storage area is at a premium, I have a canopy but it's too bulky to take on a long trip.
  • We opted, years ago, to use Quick Shades instead of hanging anything from the camper awning. I think it's important to be able to retract the awning quickly if a wind picks up, and we never leave the awning out if we are away from the camper. So portability was (and still is) important to us.

However, we found Quick Shades to be much more beneficial. They can be placed anywhere, tilted, rotated, and moved around as the sun shifts throughout the day.

We had the red one, pictured below, for over 15 years. We got it with our pop-up and used it all the time with the pop-up awning.

We used it with 3 different travel trailers, until a couple years ago when the fabric just wore think and finally ripped. We ended up getting 2 more for replacements. Although not called "Quick Shade" any more, these were purchased from a Sporting Good store, under $75 each. Wall Mart sell them, as does most home repair big box chain stores in the Spring. Prices have come way down.

The beauty of using these are their portability. We've camped in direct sun many, many times and the shade has made it very nice to go outside. It's great when the sun beats down at odd angles and there is absolutely no shade under the trailer awning. Move it around, title it a little, and you've got shade.

And, if you have activities at home, or a friends, you can always use them for non-camping events, like when our neighbors had a birthday party for their little girl and needed some shade in the yard. We saved the day for them!
