Awning sun shade

We have spent a week at the beach and DW wants one of those mesh sun shades that we see attached to the rollers of many patio awnings.

So, my first question is are they more trouble than they are worth? It appears they are designed to roll up with the awning. It also appears they are designed to attach to the roller using one of the two available slots. However, our Carefree awning does not have a slot that is not being used. The main fabric is slid into one slot, the fabric with valence continues to wrap around the roller, then the end with the valence fills the second slot. So, I am wondering if I can attach the shade should we get one.

Any feedback is appreciated.
  • Strange. All of the Rollers I have seen have three slots. One for the awning, one for valance and one free. I'm not sure how you Would install it. I find it to be invaluable when its hot but I only use it when I'm in the same location for a week or more as mine hooks to tabs in the rail and doesn't roll up with the awning.
  • Depends if you have an electric awning. If you attach them to the awning and a wind kicks up, you're going to be looking for a new motor.....Dennis
  • Made my own with sun screen material I mail ordered from Home Depot for $40. Very easy to sew. Hemmed a 1/4" line onto the edge with loops that attach to Velcro hangers that share the slot in the awing roller with a light rope. I do not roll the shade up with the awning. I folds up easily. If your awning only has two slots not sure how you are going to make this happen. If you make one hemp a line into the top and leave extra at the ends to tie to the awning arms.

When the sun angle is right into the awning area on a hot afternoon the screen is indispensable. Folds up to about the size of a bed sheet.

Dennis, most of the sun shades I've seen here at Myrtle Beach are installed in the roller slot so I am thinking those folks do roll it up with the awning. Most I've seen are attached to Carefree or A&E electric awnings.

Since I have no empty slot available, I would just devise a way to attach the thing to the assembly so it can be easily removed before stowing the awning.

The other thing I've seen here is folks anchoring the arms of the electric awnings. Surely they are disabling the auto retract feature. Most of them left the awnings that way for the entire week we've been here even in some pretty gusty ocean wind. I'm still too new to an auto awning to know exactly what I can reasonably do with it. Mine has auto retracted twice while here due to wind.
  • We have a 2010 Cameo that came with a Carefree awning (electric motor). It too has 3 slots in the roller but one slot was covered when installed at the factory. I emailed Carefree of Colorado and asked if I could attach and tie down a screen to the valance using alligator clips. They said "no as it voided their warranty". When I asked "What if I was using their Colorado brand of sun screen", (exactly the same as the one I was using) they said it was OK to tie down the shade but to roll up the awning when high winds came.

Bottom line: Use plastic alligator clips to attach the screen to the valance and take down the awning/screen in high winds......Which you would normally do anyway.....Never had an issue with the motor and we tie down the screen regularly/

IMHO this is the way to go. Attach sun shade to the valance.

I had the sun shade one that fit into the track. That's all fine and good but when a sudden storm comes up you now have to fight to get that out of the track before you can roll up your awning in time to save it.

Couple of spring loaded clips from Lowes and attach to valance. Takes 2 seconds to get it off so you can roll up the awning.
  • We have only one track in our awning so when kids got us a sun shade we put grommets at the top where the plastic rope is that should slide into awning. We hang the awning on awning light hangers then hang lights over the sun shade. We would never roll anything up in the awning.
  • Ours is in 2 pieces. One piece is about 1 foot and is attached to the awning in the groove you talk about. And it does roll up with the awning. At the bottom of it are eyelets that the second piece attaches to and then drapes down.
A lot of the time the 1 foot piece provides enough extra shade that we don't need the bottom part. But when we do use it I turn off the auto retract and pay attention to the wind and NEVER leave with it all set up.

What brand of shade do you have ? Is it the Shade Pro ? I've been looking at their website .. seems like a good idea.
