Bad back-Mattress Recommendations?

Hello, we're newbies, just bought our first travel trailer. We HAVE to buy a new mattress before camping, so I'm doing some research.

We need a good, short queen that is VERY firm for my husband with an extremely bad back. Any recommendations? Any brick and mortar stores to find a short queen, so we can try them out IN PERSON?
(we live in Illinois, only 1 Camping World haven't made it there yet)

I'd rather not waste the time and money ordering something online only to have it not work out.

Thanks in advance!

  • 2X on Sleep Number. My number is 35 DW is 85!

You can try in store and order a short queen.

    By the way a short queen is 60 x 75 and a full queen is 60 x 80

We sacrificed the room to get almost 50 percent savings.
  • I have no idea why rv manufacturers, whether they are TT, or MH's they still put a mattress most people throw out to the curb and have to buy one that works for your good night's sleep.
  • Sleep Comfort can be ordered in short queen and he can make his side as firm as he wants.
  • I don't know how your trailer bed platform is set up, but when I purchased my used 5th wheel a few years ago I replaced what seemed like a new RV mattress with a residential style queen mattress without a hitch. Maybe you'll luck out and be able to do the same thing? P.S. as this was my first (and still is) camper I'm not sure what RV mattresses are supposed to be like but the one I got rid of was laughable, I think a ball point pen had heavier springs!
  • I ordered a NuForm 11 inch mattress from Overstock dot com and it has done wonders for my old senior body.

Bed comfort varies for everyone so what may work for one may not be suitable for another. Mattresses in many if not most RVs are pretty substandard but since we don't fulltime I'd be hard pressed to replace the existing mattress entirely when it's much less costly to simply add a topper that can improve comfort dramatically. We chose a 3" Novaform memory foam gel topper from Costco and instead of cutting it to short queen size I instead extended the length of the bed platform by 6", pulled the existing mattress forward, and tucked the extra length of memory foam into the gap created at the headboard. We now have a full length 80" bed that is vastly more comfortable than the original mattress at far less cost than replacing the mattress entirely. Buy one of these toppers at Costco and if it doesn't prove satisfactory just return it. Pics are in my gallery if you're interested.
