Bad Decision - R6 Recurve Hitch

Buying product innovation and early adoption is often expensive and failure prone I've found.

It happened again when I chose the R6 Recurve. Although there are some nice convenience features the product function doesn't meet the marketing hype. Camco also seems to believe in the "illusion of customer service" promoted by well known companies such as Time Warner.

The hitch was my choice but provided by the dealer as part of the sale. Installation was done by the dealer's mechanics who had never seen one before and were unable to truly understand the configuration. I don't fault them as I'm still not there yet and I spent a lot of my life as a rigger.

To attempt to get a handle on what the configuration should look like I asked Camco if they had top and side photos or drawings of what the hitch would look like if configured for it's max rating of 1200 pounds of tongue weight.

Do you think they could take their floor model, five minutes, and a cell phone camera for that. Ha! They only had time to type a reply of 'No'. And don't look for publicized assistance; there's one single marketing hype video on YouTube and a couple of pages of instructions in the box.

So, that's it for me. I'm going to put this thing on Craigslist and go buy the Blue Ox the dealer recommended to begin with. I can live with chains knowing it's a proven product I can depend on. With the R6 Recurve I'm not sure it's doing what it's supposed to.

Sleep better by staying away from this thing.

I've never seen this product but it looks interesting.

I kind of like the idea of the bars going up and eliminating clearance issues. Also, it seems pretty neat that the bars don't move, rather they pivot on a center shaft contained in the head. From the video it shows the friction material is contained inside that pivot point and you adjust your sway tension using a clamp bolt.

Obviously your experience has been frustrating but it does seem like an interesting concept. I'll be curious to see if others try this hitch and if they are successful.

  • I think it speaks volumes that the manufacturer will not provide support to a customer that purchased one of its products.
