Battery Amp Hour

Does the amp hour rating double when two twelve volt batteries are used? I understand that they need to be both new so they don't go down to the lowest setting. thanks

  • If you have a choice, go with GC2 in series. Lead/acid batteries do no play well in parallel. I have to go work on a client's boat or I would write more about why, but trust me and you won't regret it.

This is another consideration for getting more battery capacity.

Most of us starts out with the general issue GP24 12VDC Interstate batteries from the dealer. These are 85AH batteries. To get more capacity one usually just gets a second 85AH battery which gives you 170 AH's. These two batteries connected in parallel will generally produce 12VDC at 25AMPS for 280 minutes (4.6HOURS)

By comparison two GP24 6VDC Trojan T105 GC2 Batteries connected in series will produce 12VDC at 25AMPS for 447 minutes (7.46 hours). This is double the capacity for the about the same cost. The T105 GOLF CART Batteries have very large cores insides to be able to do this... The COSTCO GP24 6VDC GC2 BATTERIES are very similar in performance to the TROJAN T105 batteries.

These are the two typical ways to get 12VDC from batteries in our RV Trailers.

Using two each 6VDC Batteries in SERIES...

Using two each 12VDC Batteries in PARALLEL...

NOTE how the AH's is affected with the SERIES and PARALLEL connections.

  • The amp hour rating is effectively doubled if the batteries are in parallel, but not if they are in series. You said 12V, but if 6V batteries are used, this applies.
