In a short term disater, you will be seperated from your disaster cache in short order. (By weather, thieves, fire, water, etc) In a long term disaster, you will still starve, just a month later than everyone else.
EDIT. In the US, people don't starve during a disaster. Disease, looters and exposure will get you first.
Many people have guns as part of their emergency preparedness items. I think an RV also can provide a mobile shelter if roads are passable or even a stationary shelter if homes are not able to be occupied (gas line breaks, etc). - Water-BugExplorer IIIn a short term disater, you will be seperated from your disaster cache in short order. I am in the process of selecting a long term food supply and after a lot of reading have narrowed my choice down to 2 suppliers. Wise Food, and the (several) freeze dried foods that CostCo sells.
We have the Wise products and actually eat the meals when camping.Freeze dried we have only used Thrive and thier stuff is great. - CavemanCharlieExplorer IIII'm another one that just uses regular canned food. Forget that stupid date on the side. If the can is still sealed and not bulged out it's fine.
I do replace them after a few years though just because.
( Oh, and you have to keep them from freezing. I had a can of green beans I forgot in the camper over winter once. I ate them the next year and it didn't kill me but, it was like eating baby food. They were all mushy. ) - Tom_TrostelExplorerThe shelf life for MREs kept at 70 degrees is 100 months. They're probably safe long after that.

- KittykathExplorer IIMy son was anxious to move to his first apartment at age 18. At grandma's, he grabbed a box of MRE's from 1978 that my brother left behind when he was in the military. He didn't die. :)
