- FrankShoreExplorerI create bacteria in the tanks to help eat away the gunk, grime and build up. This is the stuff I use
RV Digest-It
Buy a gallon of it and just put 4 oz into the tanks 24 hours before you plan on dumping! 4oz isn't a lot! This stuff is potent! - aslaksonExplorerWe use the happy camper powders - first thing we've found that actually does get the tank senors clean. Plus I never see any solids going out when we drain and flush.
al - therinkExplorerNormally in black I use only water and lots of it. Never run or store the rv with less than 5 gals water. I add water as soon as I dump and flush.
I am at a seasonal site this year and go three weeks between black tank dumps. I use one cup of Arm and Hammer Washing Soda and 5 gals water after dumping.
I have never experienced tank odors in the rv. This creates a high PH in the tank that helps offset the low PH caused by Uric acid. Flushing the tank during dumps helps keep bacteria in check.
I do not believe in using overpriced deodorizers marketed for rv tanks. - rockhillmanorExplorer IIAnswers will vary depending on HOW you RV. Once a month? Every weekend? Snowbird, Full timer, etc. How much you use your coach and in what type of weather you RV in does make a difference on what you will use.
I use Campa-Chem (powerful odor control one NOT the green one)
This product actually breaks down waste and controls odors it is not just perfume. I tried some of the new ones and it added so much perfume to the coach I had to pull off the road and dump and flush it.
This product has been around for eons for marine and RV holding tanks. And walmart carries it. So when you stop for groceries etc you know you can pick up your rv holding tank supplies.
Gray tank gets a quart of a dollar orange cleaner every other dump. - K_CharlesExplorerWe use only water.
- dbblsExplorerI use H2O. Lots of it and my tanks never have any order.

I'm using Calgon & deorderizer in the black tank now. What else can I do ?
RV Trine after each black tank dump and the same every now and then in the gray. - MNRonExplorerSearch on 'geo' for the black tank, never used anything in the gray.
We've been loosely using this method for many years and are happy with it. I make sure there are a few gallons of water in the black before starting any trip. Add in a capful or so of liquid calgon and same amount or so of detergent most of the time. Once in a while toss in some bleach too. More often than I might intend, forget to add any chemicals :) - Dakota98ExplorerOK, I currently treat the black tank with Walex Porta-Pak "during use". Nothing in the Gray tank.
The Calgon acts as a release agent, If I understand correctly.
Should I add a "cleaning agent" to the Grey tank ? If so, what ?
I've heard that both tanks, after dumpimg, should have a little water put back in them along with chemicals to keep the seals damp & help clean both tanks - Dick_BExplorerValterra's Pure Power Blue (1 pouch), a cap of Calgon liquid and a few squirts of Dawn liquid dish soap and a toiletfill of water added after each dump.
