Bolts missing (?) on Spring Bar bracket (hitch)

We have the EAZ LIFT "Elite" SYSTEM (WD) for our new 24' Cougar xLite TT. On the spring bar brackets on the trailer hitch frame, there are 2 holes on each bracket. Question is: Are there supposed to be bolts in them, to hold it to hitch frame? Our hitch frame is a tubular frame.

Our dealer where we bought the TT, said no bolts were necessary and they only need the large "Set Screw" which is located on the backside of the frame. Is this true? Are these holes for another type of hitch assembly?

And what happens if it shifts? (which it did, when we were un-latching the chain yesterday)!! I guess we will carry a rubber mallet with us, to put in back in place?

A mechanic friend suggested we drill holes through hitch frame and insert bolts, to better stabilize the brackets --- any suggestions or comments on this?

  • No bolts are necessary in ordinary installations. The only purpose of that large bolt on the back side is to keep the brackets from sliding back and forth during turns. If you have enough chain links (at least 5) between the snap up bracket hook and the bars (under tension) then you should be ok.

Sometimes bolting the brackets on through those holes is necessary on very heavy tongue weight trailers, that require strong WD bars, to keep the brackets from bending.

  • Thanks Mitch -- These are same instructions we found, also, on internet. (Dealer did not give us any type of booklet, for the hitch assembly, so had to hunt for them ourselves). We also looked at another older TT, in our storage lot where we keep ours, and they had same type of bracket but those "2 holes" did not have any bolts in them -- just the "set bolt". We'll see what EAZ says, once they get back to us.
    THANKS again.
  • Here are the install/setup instructions for the EAZ Lift.

On the parts list, they do not list any bolts for the holes in the bracket. They show the holes however! ;)

    Anyway, there you go.. :)

  • THANKS for some re-assurance, in both replies; we do have a call in to EAZ LIFT Hitch company. Will see what they say, as well.

  • Go over the installation instructions. My Reese dual cam was installed wrong. I called Reese. Reese called dealer and chewed on them for a bad install.
  • Been running my EAZ-Lift WD hitch setup for over 10 years with the brackets held in place by that one set bolt. The tension of the chains hold it in place just fine.

It could potentially shift if you take it into a very tight turn. Happened to me once.. Simply adjusted it when I noticed it unhitched. No harm done.

Just what I've experienced with mine.. I don't want anymore holes in the frame than necessary.. ;)

    Good luck!
