I didn't exactly miss it. You have a gap on the horizontal not the vertical.Heat rises vertically.
I imagine yours is cooler because you're not capturing all the exhaust/heat. Some of the exhaust and CO is escaping and so is the heat.
It is unlikely the aluminum would be cooler if all parameters were equal simply because Aluminum is a better conductor than plastic.
The lower temperature is an indicator you are not capturing all the exhaust.
The idea is to capture ALL the exhaust not some or most of it.
Again better than nothing but I would not consider it better than the real thing.
