I know you are just bloviating at your keyboard. How many dogs have you shot at your campsite? What weapon did you use? What did the authorities say?
You do that most anywhere in the country, and you will be going to jail. Plan on cruelty to animals, discharging weapon in an area not authorized, and possession of a firearm during the commission of crime comes to mind.
The burden of a self defense claim is upon the offender. So you would have to prove that any reasonable person would believe their safety and/or life (depending on the state) is in danger before discharging a firearm and killing a dog.
