Dogs rarely carry firearms. If there's a choice between me getting bit and a dog getting shot...no, no...you choose.
A dog bite is rarely deadly. A gun shot most likely is. A dog whether acting out of fear, training, or just a bad mood does not have the mental capacity to think about other options. YOU on the other hand should. You could get back in your camper, car, etc.. Or use the stick (mostly a non lethal deterrent) and before you say anything... YES I own guns. But I would only shoot a animal if my life or a loved ones life depended on it.
I would hesitate to shoot the dog just because of potentially breaking some laws, but if someone else shot him I say it's the fault of the dog's owner. Me doing what I'm allowed to do doesn't justify a dog approaching or attacking me. I would try the pepper spray first, maybe a stun gun second, and I would start stabbing the dog with a knife if his teeth are in me.
I lived in a major city in South America for 6 months and there were a significant number of dogs loose on the street. I never saw one that was aggressive towards people. I have a feeling that's because the aggressive ones don't live very long down there.
