Dogs rarely carry firearms. If there's a choice between me getting bit and a dog getting shot...no, no...you choose.
A dog bite is rarely deadly. A gun shot most likely is. A dog whether acting out of fear, training, or just a bad mood does not have the mental capacity to think about other options. YOU on the other hand should. You could get back in your camper, car, etc.. Or use the stick (mostly a non lethal deterrent) and before you say anything... YES I own guns. But I would only shoot a animal if my life or a loved ones life depended on it.
As the loving spouse of a dog attack victim, the psychobabble (not directed personally) developed by irresponsible animal apologists, does not protect you from me. Your animal is presumed to be a weapon and when uncontroled and in my space, considered potentially dangerous. I will protect my loved ones and I am immune to pc . Sorry for flaming but I see more and more people hiding behind lack of responsiblity. You love Fifi. I don't. I avoid contact with dogs whenever possible for that reason. It is incumbant upon you to keep your property under control. If you choose not to, I will take corrective measures. End of rant.
