I went through this. You got both parts of the answer above. It can be done.
You need to make sure the receiver and dish are compatible. They'd have to be years apart in age for that to be the problem. Or different makers.
Then the aiming part. Not as easy as you'd think. They sell the satalite aiming tools online. Once you have a stable level base to put it on, you temporarily attach one of these aiming devices and move the dish until you have the strongest signal. Slight adjustments can ruin or loose the signal.
