A LOT of people do. I do when necessary.
But it depends on your definition of "loud".
Mine is a built-in Onan, located at the far end away from the bedroom.
And I cool the interior off good and turn it off around midnight, worst case (usually earlier). I run it during the day only as needed.
Industrial/commercial generators are the exception but things like a proper exhaust pipe/smoke stack go a long way to keep the sound reasonable with a gen that is already pretty quiet to begin with.
Location and orientation is important with a portable unit too.
