The challenge for franchised businesses is to provide a consistent product and/or service across all locations. McDonald's is pretty good at giving you a Big Mac in Japan, France, Germany, or America that will taste the same (I've eaten a Big Mac in each place).
Marriott International puts a ton of work into auditing each hotel and tracking guest satisfaction in order to make sure the customer experience meets Marriott's criteria. People stay at Marriott hotels because the experience is predictable.
Many businesses are poor at this. The successful ones are good at it.
