Can a automatic Dodge Raider be towed flat

I have a 1989 Dodge Raider, automatic, 4 wheel drive vehicle and I'm trying to figure out if it can be towed behind my Class A. The weight is within my limits, and I can get base plates for it but the concern is the transmission. I have read one report about placing the hi-low shift lever in the "false neutral" position and that would allow it to be towed flat. Can anyone out there confirm this for me or actually has towed one? Thanx for your assistance!

  • We had a '87 Raider with the manual trans. When you put the transfer case in neutral, it locked the front and rear drive shafts together just like when in awd. It would not damage the transmission or transfer case, but you would be turning both differentials and drive shafts. It would hurt tv mileage, and increase wear and tear on your tires. The way I discovered this was trying to tow with a tow dolly. The Raider would try to drive off the dolly because the front wheels were engaged. Oddly enough you can tow them on a dolly backwards, with the trans in park, steering wheel locked, transfer case in 2wd.

  • Thank you for your note. The "false neutral" I think is a name given a position on the transfer case, not marked, between the 4 wheel drive and the 2 wheel drive but completely takes the vehicle out of gear. Even when shifted into drive the vehicle will not move. But does that mean it can be safely towed? That is the question.
  • Not sure what you mean by "false neutral". If your transfer case has a lever that allows you to put it in neutral....then you should be good to go. Being an 1989, Remco doesn't go back that far so can't check with them (at least on the website).

We towed a 1986 4x4 Toyota PU for years and all we did was put the transfer case in neutral and turn the key to ACC (to unlock the steering wheel).

    Good luck
