- paulcardozaExplorerUnfortunately, the problem has grown way beyond the capabilities of law enforcement to make a difference. Possession of a driver's licence has become a right, instead of a privilege. RMV's issue them to everyone and anyone with little regard for their ability to safely handle a vehicle.

Sorry, but we don't need more nannies in cars, we need police to enforce the texting and driving laws! Oh yeah, I commute on a motorcycle and see everything, people are constantly texting and driving, some are ELO's! - 1jeepExplorer IISorry, but we don't need more nannies in cars, we need police to enforce the texting and driving laws! - Deb_and_Ed_MExplorer IILast week, a young lady was headed eastbound on the country road in front of our work. Nice sunny day. Ed was out front with a customer, when he heard a strange sound, only to see that the young lady's car had crossed the westbound lane, tore across our "front yard", took out our mailbox, did a "Duke's of Hazzard" flying leap across our neighbor's parking lot, narrowly missed a 6' fence of a third business, and then did another leap back across both lanes of road to end up at the Post Office. The guys ran to make sure she was all right - she "didn't know what happened". I hope the responding Sheriff's Deputy checked her phone records.... she was SOOOO lucky there wasn't any oncoming traffic.
- CroweExplorerthe engine computer immediately sends an aural warning that the engine will shut down in so many seconds and pull to the curve immediately
All I see from this is an accident waiting to happen when a driver loses control of their vehicle. - 4x4vanExplorer III

So a passenger can't use their phone? Sorry, more legislation is not the answer, IMO.
Simple electronic solution:
Phone(s) off engine starts and runs, turn a phone on inside the vehicle a small inboard antenna senses the phone(s) signal only in the vehicle, not out side signals and the engine computer immediately sends an aural warning that the engine will shut down in so many seconds and pull to the curve immediately or turn the phone off.

Which article? - wa8yxmExplorer IIIWhen I followed that link, fairly well written article I might add (I often say quite a different comment about modern "Reporting") What also caught my eye was the next article down the page

navegator - bartlettjExplorerHere in the Portland, OR area, there have been several more than ususal head on collisions in the coast range on the major highways heading over to the coast. Most of the ones that have made the news this year have been impatient people passing illegally in heavy traffic or people overcorrecting responding to a close call.

Texting and other media usages are driving the traffic fatality rate up after years of improvement.
Scares the you-know-what out of me. We've all been told again and again not to text and drive, but we see it repeatedly. I don't know if we'll ever get a handle on it.
We'll have self driving cars before we get people to break that bad habit.
