Changing rear tires or not...

OK, I have a 2015 Silverado 2500 HD diesel towing a 39' Jayco 5th wheel which we just purchased. Went to the cat scales today and I'm just over my pin weight loaded but 2K under GCVW. It towed like a breeze and felt real good. I swapped out the tires on my trailer because the stock tires were junk but I'm also not impressed with the tires that came stock on my truck for towing. I have Goodyear Wranglers 265/60R20's load rated E. Any recommendations on a better tire in the 20" category or even buying new rims and getting better tires with more plys. I am headed to Disney in three weeks and that's about 700 miles each way. I want something reliable.

Thanks,

Abita Dave

  • If you are close to maximum tire ratings, your rims are probably close too. Look at the 19.5" Vision Heavy Hauler 81 rims rated at 4500 lbs each and 245/70R19.5 LRH tires rated at 4800+ lbs each. Many truck camper guys use these on SRW's because of the camper weights.
  • Thank you so very much Sir. Right to the point with very good information. I'm going to look into them tomorrow as I've always had very good luck with Michelin tires. I was looking on Ebay right before you posted at new 18" rims and it seems like a good idea alright due to the much larger range of choices just as you stated. The Michelin LTX A/T 2 LT265/70R18 124R E BSW also have the 124R rating which would give me 3527 lbs on each tire over the 121S I have now at 3190 lbs. They are a very good rated tire as well. Once again Thanks and Cheers.

LOL...good luck on that. Some folks just can't seem to answer a question without injection their off topic opinion about weights.

I frequent several haulers forums where 18" LT E tires are quite popular over the 20" size because of availability and choices.
Some have even traded their 20" wheels and tires down to the 18" sizes which have a good selection of highway tires for heavy haulers.

Michelin LTX M/S shows three 20" sizes with a 3600/3700 and 3800 lb capacity.
  • Why do you dislike the tires? Is there something wrong with them? Are they worn-out? My old HD2500 came in 2002 with Bridgestones, and that's what my tire dealer recommended since, in his opinion, they have stiffer sidewalls. I seems to get pretty good mileage out of them, over 100k miles, but they do ride kinda stiff. All I can say is, I've been happy with them for over 107,000 miles.
  • Your tires are rated for 3190 pounds each. Maybe there is something in the 19.5 range that would take a heavier rated tire.

Check with Rickson to see if they make a rim that would bolt on to your existing pattern.

But, like others said, most people pulling that size use one ton duallies or even 4500 series trucks. I wonder why they do?
  • Thanks for the reply, but I know i'm 50lbs overweight and I'm not buying a new truck. I'm not trying to adjust my pin weight. If I was 200lbs under my pin weight I still want to change tires because I don't like these. I'm asking for some opinions on tire brands people have had good service with. Please don't take offense I just want tire opinions not weight opinions please.

  • Yes your truck will pull it but you are over weight. No tire is going to help that. Sounds like you need a bigger truck.
