The steps are welded to the frame; Northwoods does this because, for them it's faster and cheaper then bolting the steps to the frame.
This means you have to get under and grind lots of stuff away, in fact you have to destroy the steps to remove them.
When I installed the replacement steps, I bolted them. That meant drilling holes in the frame for the bolts. But that was better for me then welding.
I've also used a wood platform (about 2-1/2 inches tall) to reduce the "first step".
Lastly Torklift makes an improved handle you might want to look into. We really love ours.
