My son was just telling me about a solution he came up with. Get a 5 gallon bucket, drill 2 holes in opposite sides near the top of the bucket. Also drill 2 holes in a small tuna or cat food can, run wire through the can and secure to the holes on the side of the 5 gallon bucket. Put some water in the bottom of the bucket, put peanut butter in the small can. The chipmunks can walk the wire over to the can but then fall in the bucket and can't get out.
This won't work for squirrels. He used a large rat trap with peanut butter for the squirrels. I've heard that a string of cheap Christmas lights work under the hoods of cars/trucks to keep squirrels out, haven't tried it myself. You can also live trap squirrels, then relocate them several miles away. They are very destructive, once they find a source for chewing, yikes. Good luck
