Class A vs class C

What kind of gas mileage do you get?

  • Over time reading a lot of threads, I see the general numbers of 6-8 for a Class A gasser, and 7-9 for a Class C.
  • Our 2006 Class A gets between 7.5 and 8 MPG, whether we tow our toad or not. It's a 32'Georgie Boy Pursuit with a Ford V-10 engine. . We've been all up and down the East Coast and did some driving in the Appalachians. We previously owned a Coachman Leprechaun Class C (1996 I believe) and averaged 8.5-9.5 MPG with a Chevy 354 engine. When we towed with that the mileage was more than 1/5 MPH less. Hope this helps, but there are so many variables it's not an easy question to get reliable information for. DH always says "if you really have to worry about MPG when using your RV, you might not be in a position to do it at all"! Honestly, we don't always find it a less expensive way to enjoy our vacations, but it is always more enjoyable!!! With the cost of so many CGs going up and the cost of fuel doing the same, we can sometimes find less expensive lodging and using our small toad to drive to a location - but then there's no campfire!!!!!
  • If you are looking for which to buy based on mpg it still depends on where you live, how you drive, how much you travel with, and the daily weather. I just completed a 5700+ mile trip through 13 Western States and averaged 9.78 mpg with our Chateau Sport 26Q Class C with an 8.1 Vortec engine. Highest was 10.8 and lowest was 8.1. My goal was to average 9.5 and that's what I based my gas budget on so saved a couple of hundred dollars. I also don't pull a toad so that also will factor into information. So if you can get 6 to 10 then you are in the ballpark. I hope that helps.
  • In reading posts from several RV forums for many years it seems most newer Class A & Cs get about the same mileage (within 4MPG)on average.

    The way I look at it.... when we are out in the RV the enjoyment is worth every extra penny so who cares what the mileage is.

    I'm guessing, if we were able to calculate all costs involved in RV travel versus the cost of staying staying home, the 4MPG or even a 6MPG difference might be offset by the reduced electrical, fuel for errands and water usage at our home while we aren't there.

    That's my two cents...
  • I hear what you're saying, but I know that I get 8-10 out of my E350 when pulling my HTT.
  • There are so many makes, models and sizes of each, combined with fuel type, speed, choice of roads and the landscape, that anybody's answer won't be very useful. Just go with lousy. But its still cheaper than your share of the jet fuel when flying from point A to point B, plus car rental, hotel rooms and restaurant meals. Plus, you have your "stuff" with you, and you don't have to travel from New York to Chicago via Atlanta.
