cleaning countertops

DW is asking about cleaning the countertops of our new Arctic Fox unit. Are they sealed granite? What products are you using? Thanks for your comments in advance.

  • I still do it the old fashioned way and it works perfectly. I fill the sink about 1/4 full of hot water and dish soap. Then, I use the hot soapy water to wash the counters with a green non-scratch pad to remove any dried on food particles. I follow it up with a dish cloth of soapy water. Then I do a final wipe down with a damp wash rag and dry with a dish towel. My counter tops are 10 years old and look brand new.
  • If the countertop has a shiny surface any general purpose cleaner will do, spray, rinse off with wet sponge or cloth then dry. I make my own multisurface cleaner by mixing the general purpose cleaner of choice in water in a spray bottle. I like spic n span liquid or plain Mister Clean (not antibacterial).

Another great cleaner is as described by previous poster with vinegar. I omit the alcohol and add a little clear Ivory dish detergent. Indeed it can be used on windows as well.

You can use this on any type of countertop or other hard surfaces. If the unit is new you should have a manual that talks about countertop surfaces. If it is indeed sealed granite it may require resealing later on. That manual or a chat with the manufacturer will give you more tips on care.
  • They're not granite--too heavy. Most mfgrs use a composite similar to Corian. Just about any non-abrasive general purpose cleaner will suffice.
  • I'm not sure about using this concoction on sealed granite, but I make my own RV cleaner using equal parts of white vinegar, alcohol 70% kind, and distilled water. This came from an RV newsletter.

I use it for windows, and cleaning the whole RV. It's a great mold deterrent too. Love the smell it leaves behind. Very fresh smelling.

  • I have sealed black granite countertops at home. I use Clorox Disinfecting Wipes. They're pre-moistened and pop out of the plastic canister one at a time, like Kleenex. They dissolve and pick up any dried crud and when you're done just toss it. No dried film afterwards. They also work just as well on the fake granite countertops in the RV.
    There's about 80 wipes in a canister. I buy 4 packs of canisters a Sam's.
