clearance light wiring question

Getting ready to install a rear view camera and need to remove the center rear running light up top to hook up.

2017 Cochmen APex 249rbs

Raining for two days so I could not check. Wondering if someone could answer.

1- Do the lenses on these running / clearance lights just pop off or is there a trick to getting them off with out breaking the lens?

2- Should I expect a red and black wire there indicating +/_ or do the RV folks use a different system, or it any ones guess?

Thanks
  • Thanks for all the replies folks. I removed the clearance light yesterday. Tied into the light with my camera wires. sealed all the screws and wiring hole with proflex. Mine is an inexpensive camera so I will test it with the tranmitter in the rear sitting on a medicine cabinet. The way I wired it I can move the transmitter to the front of the TT if needed and just run a video cable to it while traveling.

BTW the wiring to my light was black / black. They were connected to a white and light green or light blue wire.

Took me a while to solder with the piece of **** solder gun I bought from Home Depot. It is going back. (My 25 yr old soldering gun that got flooded and tossed during Mathew was better).

Thanks for all the help / advice.
  • nice install and thanks for sharing pics....no words needed! Was it possible to install camera bracket over the round hole to cover it?

Look for a small notch or opening around the lens. Insert a flat screwdriver and twist.

That's the little slot you use to break a chunk out of the lens on old, weathered lights. :)

    LOL! Yup, done that!

  • thanks for the answers. as soon it quits raining I'll put the advice to use
  • Look for a small notch or opening around the lens. Insert a flat screwdriver and twist.
  • It's usually pretty obvious which wire is which. There will be one going to the middle of the housing and attaching to the center post of the bulb. The ground will be going to a rivet or something similar that is off center and ultimately connecting to the side of the bulb.
  • I have found that more often than not the two wire, non-grounding clearance lights have two black wires. This is due in part to the fact that most incandescent lamps are not polarized, however, many of the LED lights are and there you will usually find the normal Red and Black leads.

    Just my experience.
  • Most clearance lights just pop off. You may need a little screwdriver to gently pry it.
Once it's off, you will likely find a positive black wire and a negative white wire.
