I don't think it matters what it's called as long as the entire party understands what the term means.
I was invited to go on a "camping" trip some years back by a casual acquaintance: at the designated time, I showed up with my (as was typical for 20 years ago, unfortunately not so typical now :( ) backpack fully loaded for a week's trip into the Chugach. The other two groups on the party (2 couples) showed up with a pickup full of "car-camping" gear and a truck camper respectively along with reservations for a campground.
Quick trip home to throw in the bad-a** wall tent, the upright campchef grill, the bottle of propane, 40 gallons of house water in jugs, and two duffel bags full of clothes and kitchen gear and I was fitting right in!
