Dingy electrics

Getting an '02 Wrangler set up to tow for snowbirding. Have a Ready Brake, and now getting around to the electrics.

Question is weather to run a charging wire from the TV. With the key on, the RB will activate the brake lights, my concern is weather it will run the Wrangler's battery down.

The TV has a 7 pole jack, and I could easily run a charging wire to the toad's battery. Is there any reason not to?

Yep, thats the reason I think I should run a charging wire. I don't know if its enough to drain the battery, or if there is any other parasitic loss. I've read where some pull a fuse.

Brake lights are usually not enough. The fuse pull thing is mostly only for vehicles that have to have the key left in the accessory position to unlock the steering column to avoid killing the battery.

Does your Wrangler have the steering column unlocked when you take the key out?
  • It's cheap enough to buy the wire and circuit breakers so why not. Don't forget if you're wiring the MoHo lights to the existing towed lights that you need a relay disconnect for the towed.

I've towed my Subaru 2,000 miles on 3 separate occasions. The Subaru's brake lights are on so infrequently and for such a short time that it didn't cause a problem.

Now, if you are talking about tail lights or daytime running lights, the answer will change.

But, either way, it won't HURT anything at all to run the charge line.
  • The best add on you can do for dingy towing, I have had a charge wire since 2002 and have never had a dead battery on the CRV in over 40,000 miles and the Unified brake system I have does use the toad battery to run a vacumne pump on the toad. When you run the wire, install a 20 amp circuit breaker near each battery to protect from any possible short in the charge wire. just remember to disconnect the seven way if you park overnight without unhooking the dingy or you could run down the dingy battery
