Disconnect battery cable on CRv?

Have a 2010 CRV and I am on a trip pulling the car. Taking my mh to Florida to sell. The battery on the Honda seems to to down after 2 hours. This is not normal. Honda checked battery a couple of weeks ago and said it was good.

Some people put a cut off switch on the battery cable. Can I as a short term fix disconnect the ground when I pull the CRV? I will connect when I get to my destination to start the CRV.

What do you think?

Steve
  • To answer you question, yes. A one time/way trip then connect it and reset your radio codes.
Pull the radio fuse might be a good idea, if you want to get on your back and find and manipulate the little fuse pullers, that will eliminate connecting the battery every morning or 8 hours of towing.
Putting in a charge line/switch etc for this one way trip seems like a waste to me.
Personally, I would pull the radio fuse if you are able to do so.
Under your hood there is a plastic electrical box that has fuses and a fuse puller if its the same as my 2013 model.
  • We tow a 2012 CRV and on a recent 4000+ mile trip followed the owners manual instructions for towing behind a recreational vehicle, the battery did not discharge. We use a switch to "pull the fuse" so it is easier, we like easy.
  • My '09 CRV has the same problem. The quick and easy solution, maybe not the best, was to install a battery disconnect like THIS

If you need power for the brakes or lights this won't work. I'm using a Ready Brake and the lights are independent.

Probably better is a charge wire from the MH. Or maybe a switched fuse (check recent CRV posts)

  • you should read you owners manual from the CRV-Towing section. It probably tells you which fuse to pull.;)
  • Sounds like you are turning the ignition key one click to much.If all your indicator lights on the dash are on , that is probably your problem
  • I went to Hinda and put a new battery in. Honda said no issue if I want to disconnect the battery. Mechanic showed me two fuses to pull. Same as no battery.

    We will see tommarrow.

    Thanks for replies.

  • I added charge line from my motorhome to my CRV, if it runs down your battery in a few hours there is something wrong, something isn't turned off or your road braking system is malfunctioning. I have towed for three days straight without and the CRV started each day, with the charge line.
